About Me

I am a Vancouver-born novelist and screenwriter with more than 25 years experience.  Vancouver continues to be my home and I love it here.

I think Vancouver is a great city for writers.  In the early morning, during those cold dark days of winter, I have no problem heading upstairs to my office and working.  And when the sun finally does come out, this city is beyond beautiful - with endless places to go and some of the finest restaurants in the world.

I grew up in a suburb called Burnaby.  There were five kids in my family.  I was the youngest for 11 years, and then another one came along and that was the end of whatever special status I thought I had.  I was sent outside to that 'lonely sandbox in the backyard' where I'm assuming some kind of creativity must have kicked in.

I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in psychology and a passion for cinematography.  I wanted to become one of those cameramen that you see at professional hockey games, but that didn't pan out, thank goodness.  I then went on to shoot documentaries and educational films, and even managed to pull off a few TV commercials and a feature film before the screenwriting bug took hold.  I have since written and story-edited dozens of animated TV scripts, along with a number of live action half-hours, hours, and even a feature-length movie (you can check out my credits on the IMDB site if you'd like).

Being a screenwriter in Canada is a unique challenge.  I consider myself lucky that I have been able to make a living at it.  My transition to novels, which occurred not long ago, has been seamless.  I think my study of story structure during my screenwriting days has come in handy.  It certainly feels that way whenever I start a new project or simply face a blank page on one of those cold dark mornings that I mentioned!

I look forward to having my second novel published, which I have just completed.  And a third one is on the way.  So stay tuned!
